Seventeen-year-old Julia Wright doesnât understand her friendsâ obsession with boys. She proudly maintains her composure no matter who is in her presence â though some annoying and rude boys still manage to grate her last nerve. Then she is blackmailed into being the manager of the menâs swim team, and finds herself face to face with the worst of them all. Team Captain Vander Thelxinoe is the typical self-assured jock. He has the ability to change peopleâs minds at will, only his charms donât work on Julia. Can Julia and Vander survive the trial set before them, or will they face the extreme consequences of failure?
As a substitute teacher, Jolene spends her days in high school classrooms harvesting material for her Young Adult novels. She also uses it as an outlet for fangirling by showing upcoming book-to-movie trailers at the end of class, or discussing vital issues like whether Katniss should have picked Gale or Peeta. She is committed to helping Special Education teenagers become independent adults and helping them find a way to focus on the positive especially when life gets hard. At home, Jolene loves to cuddle with her husband, two kids, and three catsâsometimes all at onceâwhile reading Young Adult books or repeatedly watching movies based on them.

I study his profile. His chiseled jaw and dark, floppy hair are like something out of a magazine advertisement. His eyes, tooâthey arenât dark to match his hair, like mineâthey are parts of green and blue, much like the painting of the sea in the other room. âWho painted that piece above the couch in there?â He shrugs, not answering me in any concrete way. Then he shifts his weight from one foot to the other and his awkwardness makes it clear to me. âYou did it, didnât you? Youâre a painter.â He shrugs again. I hop down from my stool to go take another look at the painting. The artist must have signed it, and I will get my answer that way. I go down the hall, past the bathroom, the stairs, and the front door until Iâm standing in the parlor, looking at Vander, who is blocking the painting from my view. He must have gone through the dining room next to the kitchen to end up in here before me. Heâs staring at me and chewing on his lip while flexing and balling his hands. Heâs more nervous than I have ever seen himânot before a swim meet, not in class when he didnât know an answer, not when he told me how he felt in the bathroom a little bit ago. This is where his heart lies, in this painting of this island. I try to look around him, and he leans over. âDonât.â He is stern, but gentle. He clears his throat. âPlease donât touch it. You will want to, but donât.â Heâs right. I do want to touch it; I want to climb inside of it. Iâm seeing it, and somehow itâs seeing me, and itâs making me feel pulled apart. I want to dive into the waters, to swim to that far-off land, and I also want to turn the boat around and sail as far and as quickly as I can in the opposite direction. Meanwhile, the light from the sun is dimming, laughing at me for thinking I can have any control here. I want in! Vander grabs both of my arms, which are currently outstretched toward the painting. My knees are on the seat of the couch, and I donât even remember moving forward. His voice startles me. âYou canât.â I blink hard and turn to look him fully in the face. âI canât what?â âYou canât go there, and you canât go away from there. Itâs just a painting.â Was I talking out loud, or can he read my mind? How does he know what I was thinking? I let him lead me through the dining room, back into the kitchen, where the timer is going off. I shake my head to let loose the feelings that painting stirred in me. âItâs more than that, and you know it. How?â I donât even have to finish the sentence. He knows exactly what Iâm asking.

"Tommy took a deep breath as his eyes traveled from the womanâs hair, down her shoulders, and then to her hips and legs. She was wearing a dress under her white blazer. A yellow floral dress with white shoes. He hadnât realized how long it had been since he had seen a true civilian. His life had been filled with green fatigues and military boots for so long.
Standing there in that dress, she may have been the most beautiful woman Tommy had ever laid eyes on. When his eyes traversed back up their path, and again he saw her angelic face, he knew she was the most beautiful, by far."

âEarth to Marley! Dr. Banks? Hello!?â
Her voice is getting louder. I had better acknowledge her or who knows what she may do. âWhat?â
âI asked if you wanted to go for drinks Saturday. A few of us are going out. Thought I would invite you...â
Saturday⦠Saturday? Do I have plans Saturday? I donât, except checking in at the hospital. I am not even on call, so checking in at the hospital is only because I choose to. I could get out of it. And of course she knows my on call schedule. Shit, I need a better excuse and some way of stalling her while I come up with that excuse.
âOh, I am sure Dr. Banks is booked up for Saturday Ella, she couldnât possibly want to slum it with us.â
I groan inwardly. He always seems to show up at the wrong times. Well, I think any time he is around is the wrong time, so he doesnât have much hope. I know what everyone says about me. I know that everyone knows that I donât get out of the house much, except to come here, so he is trying to piss me off. Sadly, after today, itâs working, and my ability to deal with him is on its last limb. So there goes my filter right out the window.
âOh, Dr. Beckett? You are going to be there? I do like a good game of guess the tramp, so Iâd love to go.â I smile up at him as sweetly as I can muster. Everyone is watching and waiting to see who will win this round.
âGuess the tramp?â he asks, somewhat amused, that damned smirk starting to surface.
âOh, yeah. We love to figure out who you will drag back to your cave and demean for your own pleasure, then kick to the curb and take their self-respect with you.â Point to Marley!
He laughs a deep laugh, then leans on the table right next to me.
I can smell him and a hint of perfume, which makes me want to gag. I bet itâs the perfume from the resident this morning. I wonât back down from him this time, though. He has tried to push me down and it usually works, but, today, I have decided to be stronger. At least, in the last few minutes, I have decided to be stronger. So I will hold my head up high.
I turn to meet his gaze and watch his eyes widen as he sees the challenge in them. We stare at each other for a while, each one of us seeing who will cave first. I see his eyes change right before he plays his card and know I have officially lost this round, too.
âOh, you donât get it. It is never just about my pleasure; I make sure she is very satisfied.â He winks, then turns to walk away, not getting to the end of the table before he turns around and catches me gaping at him. âSee you Saturday Dr. Banks.â
Shit. Asshole-2, Marley-0.
